Your explanation captured my attention and made me want to keep watching because you were passionate about what you were explaining, and I think this is the key to teaching pretty much anything. Your example was perfect, and because of the simplicity of it and how it applies to everyday life (something we all can relate to), your video made me think more about the concept. I felt engaged and interested throughout, but the reason this criterion isn't full marks is because often you were in front of your whiteboard, which made it a bit harder to be focused and engaged, but because of what you said and how you explained negative steps, it wasn't too big of a deal.

First off, nice topic and demonstration of how to take a negative step! I liked your idea of using a visual to demonstrate your point, and the last image was especially unique. However, I didn't find this topic too interesting, and I thought you could've provided a more convincing case as to what a negative step particularly is. I know you probably won't learn about this yet, but what you're saying is kind of like vectors, which you can think of as arrows with a direction and angle. Vectors can be angle, and is very similar to your topic if you want to search it up. Anyways, if I understand what you were hoping to get across, but your case wasn't particularly convincing. In your example, taking a negative step is the same as taking a positive step in the opposite direction, is it not? But I liked your presentation style and how you took the time to explain things, so good job!

I was able to focus throughout the video, but it was not particularly interesting or captivating. I could have dazed off if not trying to focus

I liked the fact that the person used drawings to enhance her explanation; however, I felt disengaged after only a couple of minutes because of the repetition of the same idea.

Your explanation was definitely rigorous, as you could graph it as well as explained it visually and verbally. After watching your video, the idea of negative steps definitely makes a lot of sense. I don't feel that you glossed over important points, and I think you were able to establish real intuition and understanding of the concept for any viewer at any age. Your example of the house and walking to the supermarket was perfect, in my opinion, and what made it better was when you changed the perspective. I think this was really good as it made the explanation much more useful as it makes applying the knowledge you portrayed in your video to other, unfamiliar situations much easier and makes the step to developing a thorough and intuitive understanding much easier. I don't know if you have learned about vectors yet, it looked like you might have touched on it briefly, and if you added/mentioned something about this, you definitely would have gotten full marks on this criterion. It is something that would have made the understanding of your concept even clearer and deeper.

You explained it decently well, but it was fundamentally all about subtraction. This is more of a common sense kind of thing, such that if you go 20 steps right and 5 steps back, then you've ultimately went 15 steps right. I wouldn't say it's particularly relevant and important, I think you just provided an easy and understandable way to demonstrate subtraction using a number line type of situation.

I liked how you used the whiteboard, but as I said previously, it would have been better if you weren't in front of it as much as it impaired your ambiance a bit. The way I was taught about the concept of negative steps didn't give as an intuitive explanation, and the way it was taught didn't suit my learning styles, whilst this did much better. One thing that would have been a minor change would be if you drew the blue line for the negative steps a bit higher than the 20step line just so that there was a gap to see it a bit more clearly, but this didn't hinder your grade. Also, the slides you made at the end passed too fast to read properly, and it looks like you put a lot of effort into this, so it would have been nice for you to explain them briefly, maybe with a voice-over. This has absolutely nothing to do with your grade, but I think it's AWESOME that you play harp and are semi-homeschooled!! I play the harp too, and I've been playing for around 9.5 years now, and I hope you keep it up. Was a wonderful coincidence. :)

As I said before, I liked your thinking of taking "negative steps" as an analogy, but ultimately it was about subtraction. You provided a few good examples, but I believe they weren't too strong to stand on their own. They can be easily refuted by your friends' perspectives of taking positive steps in the negative direction, so I would suggest a more solid way of backing up your claim that people can take "negative steps".

The Khan Academy Junior Breakthrough Challenge

Haley participated in the Junior Breakthrough Challenge last week.  She proposed a "new math idea" whereby one *could* take a negative step.  She drew a couple of diagrams, and recorded her explanation on video.  Then used 'movie maker' to edit it a tiny bit.  Every step of the process was taken with care - and a very first effort of this kind.  While we don't expect her to win, it was great to see her engaged, and motivated.  Also, watching/evaluating other peer videos and ideas was a very beneficial exercise for her.  One of her evaluations was this one - and she thought this guy was *awesome.*

Geometry - Teaching Textbooks

Done (with a tutor as needed) over the summer.

I must say, I am a fan of this geometry course.  While it isn't that 'complicated', it is a great basic course that introduces concepts, allows for practice, has great good lectures, and Haley felt comfortable advancing to algebra 2 (which, admittedly, is quite disconnected from geometry, anyway).

Geometry can be a difficult subject for many students.  Haley, likewise, finds it complicated.  However, geometry is well-incorporated into the AwesomeMath lectures and Summer Program.  So, combined with these resources, we felt comfortable with TT.

Home from camp


Haley is HOME from Math Camp.  She had geometry class in the mornings and algebra 1.5 (transition from algebra 1 and 2) in the afternoons.  9 - 5p, Monday - Saturday.  Plus evening homework and weekly exams in each class.  That's 42 hours of math instruction, not counting group homework sessions or private office hours EACH WEEK.  Times 2.5 weeks 105 instruction hours in intermediate math for this 12 year old!!!

She is eager to jump right into summer geometry class (her choice, not mine) and has already (in less than 1 week) completed 10 lessons.  "After that math camp, Mommy, this geometry is very easy!"

Algebra and Math

As I continue reading, researching, and learning about homeschooling to college, I realize that I had some basic work to do:  start her transcript.

Although she is technically only in the 7th grade, and I do have another year to get it all together before high-school, it is important to realize that preparing for high-school HAS to begin in 6th grade!!  In 6th grade, I made it a point to accelerate Haley through math so she would be in a position to take algebra as a 7th grader.  So the summer before 7th grade, spent the entire summer (with the help of a local community college math teacher who offers tutoring) we hammered through pre-algebra.  Now she's on the home-stretch of a very successful algebra year!!

This year (algebra) I started with myself supplementing the 2 day/week teacher, videos, and book work (with solutions).  However, after the 1st semester, I realized that I was spending way too much time relearning algebra to teach it to Haley.  Haley likes human interaction, so having her simply watch a video and study a book to teach herself isn't as effective as a real-live person.  And since algebra for a 12 yo isn't the easiest subject in the world, I decided to hire a 2 day a week tutor to supplement the 2 day per week teacher.  This has been WONDERFUL for Haley.  Tutor comes Monday and Wednesday.  She goes to Hybrid school and take over an hour of algebra on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Haley continues to go math club.  This math club is a very prestigious club with university professors as faculty.  The topics range from geometry to algebra, to trig and number theory.  The children there are excited about math, and the teachers are excellent.  The conversation is actually designed to help the child become fluent in the language of math.  Learn how to THINK math.

Additionally, Haley will be attending their 3 week residential summer camp: Awesome Math Academy.  The camp intakes students as young as 12, so she's right on time.  Because it is local to us on the campus of University Texas at Dallas, it is the perfect segue into other residential academic camps that are on our radar.

Music Theory - Gold Medalist with Texas Music Teachers Association


Haley decided to take a 2nd Music Theory Exam this year to put her ahead of her grade level.  She ACED it (100% with the bonus question).  This is a great segue into pre-AP Music theory that she's taking next year, or the following year (we'll see how much she has on her plate and adjust as necessary).

Haley starts Math Club


Haley is LOVING her new Math Club.  Being able to "talk math" and learn to "think math" is especially exciting when your brain is a young sponge!!

The director of the club is Dr. Titu Andreescu (professor at UT Dallas) who conducts a premier math academy locally that challenges the children and stretches them beyond "classroom math."  Clubs such as this one prepare students for the Math Olympiad and ranking high in this international competition results in the student writing their own ticket into any science/tech school in the country.
A great place to be.

Getting busy starting with MATH (and did she really *skip* 7th grade?)

We met with a premier area competitive math teacher and coach today.  People drive for HOURS from all of North and mid-Texas to participate in this prestigious program - Awesome Math Academy.  There are programs at UT Dallas, Cornell, and UC Berkeley.  There is an application, an exam, interview, and fees due in order to participate.


I've realized that supplemental math courses/exposure is critical to math success.  This program begins at age 12, and being that Haley got an A in algebra, and is excited to learn more, I sought additional opportunities for her in this area.  I scratched the surface of this whole new world, with the help of a couple of books:

I spent all of yesterday reading (cover to cover) these 2 books, taking notes, and implementing some of the advice.  Once piece of such advice was, the math club.  Math has its own international competitions.  Being able to compete is a GREAT advantage for any student.

Did you know that its better to take algebra in 7th grade such that the student has completed calculus by 11th in order to really understand and possibly master AP Physics as a senior?  Do you realize that, at the time of standardized testing, the more math and science a child has completed, the more competitive they are?  And that competitiveness begins in 7th grade?  Did you know that national talent searches (think scholarships, college admissions, and more opportunities to learn and excel in general) are a "7th grade thing?"  Pre-official-talent searches begin in 2nd grade?  If you wait until your child is in high-school (9th grade) you are already behind the 8 ball!!

So we are thinking:  Haley is in "8th grade" because many doors open in 8th grade that are closed in 7th.  And many more doors (particually community/socially) are open to "high-schoolers" (i.e. 9th grade) than to middle schoolers.  What you do well, matters more in "9th grade."  Therefore, as it serves her (for access and opportunity) we will have her portrayed as an 8th grader this year (9th grader next year - think hospital volunteer that cannot be an 8th grader but CAN be a 9th grader).  But really, it is our plan to have her graduate in 2020.

As a bonafide 12yo 7th grader, she is way ahead of the curve, and in-line with most expected accelerated programs (on course to take math beyond calculus, AP science, and spend significant time on personal development, interests, and making an impact in an area of interest - thereby maximizing her chances of being accepted to a university of her choice).
